WHAT IS A PSYCHIATRIST? A psychiatrist is a physician, a person with an M.D. or D.O. degree, who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. The treatment is medication in some instances, psychotherapy in others, and both in still others. If psychotherapy is prescribed, it may be carried out by the psychiatrist or the psychiatrist may refer that aspect of the treatment to another qualified professional.
